The Clipperton Project - Part 2
Written by Trippe
Thursday, 13 September 2012 11:43

This is part 2 of a two part blog. Click here to view part 1.

Bay Area artist and waterman, Martin Machado, was invited to sail with a group of artists and scientists to a far off uninhabited atoll in the middle of the Eastern Pacific. Exotic animals and beautiful tranquil scenes. Check it and dream of similar travels.

(photo: Machado) I saw some footage of the island from the 80's when Jaques Cousteau came here, so I convinced French Tom to bring one of his surfboards. But we couldn't find anywhere that didn't look like it would smash us to bits.

(photo: Beek) Ashore, a tent camp was pitched on the cement foundation of an old base. The island has an insane history involving conflicting nations, pirates, murders, and a whole bunch of marooned people. Its definitely worth looking into if you're a history buff.

These birds were hilarious, totally unafraid of people and not too smart, they would fly into us all the time.

Here's a large paintings I did on paper, rolled up in a tube, and shipped out to Scotland in June. Titled "The Inhabitants of the Waters of Clipperton Atoll"

(photo: Naim Rahal) For another five days and nights we sailed basically due south, putting us far offshore as the Mexican coastline juts eastward.

(photo: Machado) Hey what the heck?

(photo: Machado) Ha, oh geez.

(photo: Naim)

(photo: Biller) I don't think they had seen a woman in months, so needless to say Manon took some harassment. Here one guy gave her the gift of a shirt but said she had to switch it with hers. That's about when we asked to be taken back to our boats.

SXSW ~ An Intern's Journey
Written by Alex Uhrich
Tuesday, 27 March 2012 10:11

Our wonderous intern and SFAI student, Alex Uhrich, traveled off to the Lone Star state for beers and musical enhancements. Loaded with our trusty Olympus Stylus Epic he brought back these photos with an edition of word sounds.

1.jpg

After 36-hour ordeal trying to escape San Francisco for South by Southwest, I finally made it into Austin. I caught a bus downtown to meet up with some friends and started making my way east. It was pretty much instantly a shit storm of activity, drunk girls stumbling everywhere, music blaring from every bar, and people generally having a good time. I made it to my first show, which was a Burger Records showcase at a small record store called Trailerspace. We started in on the free beer and watched some awesome bands play, both overlying themes of my trip. My friends Pangea, who I spent most of my time down south with, killed it. ~READ ON

INKSLINGERS @ Vermillion Editions, Amarillo, TX
Written by Michael Krueger
Friday, 23 March 2012 11:55

Michael Krueger (that's me), Jenny Schmid, John Lysak and Bill Fick descended on Vermillion Editions in Amarillo, Texas (Feb. 5 - 7) to make as many giant lithographs as possible in 3 days. Billed as the 'Inkslingers' we were invited to the newly relocated Vermillion Editions Ltd. specifically to make prints on the German-made Maylander offset press. Master printers John Lysak, Scott Frish & Michael Raburn were on hand to assist with printing and platemaking. Fully equipped, stocked and ripe for inkslinging, Texas ain't messing around, this 10,000 square foot printshop is the motherload boondoggle of all printshops!

Aloha Means So Many Things pt.2
Written by Kelsey Brookes
Tuesday, 20 December 2011 11:33

I made a painting while I was in Hawaii that had a bunch of tiny little faces on it. It was a fine painting, but as I mentioned before, the people Pat put together on this trip were some of the most inspiring and awesome people I had ever met. I decided I needed to do something for everyone. So I borrowed a jig saw, cut up the painting into a bunch of small paintings and gave one to everyone that was staying at the RVCA houses with us. -Kelsey Brookes

Aloha Means So Many Things pt.1

Monday, 19 December 2011 13:09

RVCA got 4 houses on the North Shore this year and packed them with an eclectic mix of talented people. They asked me if I wanted to go (I do not know how I got included), I did and below is what happened.

Hawaii, it seems like such a simple place. Simplicity is there to be had if you want it but hawaii is not a simple. Hawaii has a little bit of Hollywood some Miami, a bit of Brazil, a lot of Australia and a dash of New York all wrapped up with waves, coconut trees and pineapple bushes. Hawaii is a dynamic and as we will soon see a bizarre place. -Kelsey Brookes

Michael Hsiung headed out to NYC last month for Supply and Demand featuring works by Chris Yormick, Rich Jacobs, Russ Pope and Jay Howell at House of Vans. Michael blogged it up while back and we broke the massive post up into two parts (Part 1 here). Totally spaced on ading part II... Better late than never.

Vans recently sent me down to NY to meet up and check out the September 10th Supply and Demand show - featuring works and a collaborative installation by Chris Yormick, Rich Jacobs, Russ Pope and Jay Howell - at the House of Vans.

I was super excited to check out New York (my first time) as well as see what these creative dudes were up too! This unique show in a 20,000 square foot warehouse also featured food trucks, Juxtapoz magazines, a DJ, a gallery space, and an upstair bowl to skate. My head finally stopped reeling this week. Here's some photos from the trip.

Sylvia Ji in Melbourne - R. Malley Blogging
Written by Ryan Malley
Tuesday, 13 September 2011 15:00

I'm Ryan Malley owner of 827INK.com. On June 24th, 2011 I flew to Melbourne, Australia with artist Sylvia Ji for her first Australian exhibit. For the past few years I've been working with a really amazing guy named Martin McIntosh, owner of Outre Galleries in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth. Sylvia and I, along with Martin, thought it would be cool to have a Pop-up Ji show at his gallery in Melbourne. This is kind of a crazy post because after Sylvia's show I did an art/drinking tour of Australia.

Put on Cape. Go to Town.
Written by David Shillinglaw
Wednesday, 01 June 2011 10:13
April found me landing in the Southern hemisphere for the first time. I landed in Cape Town at the tail end of March to make the most of my month residency at A Word Of Art gallery. I was artist in residence along side an incredible artist from Vancouver named Indigo. I was greeted at the airport by Ricky Lee Gordon. Ricky is the captain of the ‘word of art’ ship. He immediately drove us to signal point to see the city from above, grabbing a six-pack of black label en route. The Ocean was completely covered in a thick foggy mist, a strange sight even for a native Capetownian. The sun sank and set as we drank beers from bottles. From that point my cape was on and I was going to town. South Africa opened its arms to me and set me forward into the colourful world of Cape Town. -David Shillinglaw

Ferris Plock is at The Dump - Part III
Written by Ferris Plock
Tuesday, 18 January 2011 11:18
San Francisco is a great city for many reasons, and one of them is that our city dump has an artist residency program. That's right, they invite a couple artists at a time to rummage through our trash and make art from it. In fact, artists are only allowed to use materials they find at the dump to create the show, and they have 3 months to do so (photos from last reception).

Our buddy Ferris Plock has just began his art dump residency and will be blogging as he creates his show opening January 21st. This is his third blogging installment. (Part I - Part II)

Fecal Pal Matt Irving does all of the creative work for Adidas Skateboarding along with Juice Design here in SF and guest blogs up a really interesting project Adidas was involved with last spring. Transworld Skateboarding invited 4 shoe teams to compete in an artistic competition where each team is given a warehouse, skate obstacles and given 10 days to shoot a short video which will be judged on the level of skating, creativity, the use of obstacles, and overall image and video quality.

This blog is a little behind the scenes from the 10 days in Matt's words.
