How would you describe your work to someone?
Systems of geometric shapes falling into place.
Frank Stella, Kill Pixie, Maya Hayuk, Gemma Smith, housing developments, dazzle camouflage.
Cheese burgers or tofu burgers?
Cheese burgers, although sometimes I go for a veggie burger when I feel like I've been eating too much meat and its punching my heart in the face.
Working routine? Music? Time of day?
I work best at night, so I usually start painting around around 11pm and go until I am too tired to continue. I think music is pretty integral actually, and I usually try to listen to electronic music because the repetitive nature mimics the patterns and repitions I paint. It also give me more courage to be spontaneous and take risks in my work, where I find more mellow music makes me think too much about what I'm doing, then I second guess myself.
How do you pay the bills?
Post-dated cheques and automatic withdrawls.
Describe your process for creating new work.
Observe the city, observe the land.
Tools of the trade?
ink, acrylic paint, cake, tar, neon lights, lots of tape recently.
What are you really excited about right now?
I am actually getting married in under 3 weeks, so that's pretty exciting I'd say! Other excitable things: honeymoon in Paris, The Cheaper Show, my one week old nephew Luke, the World Cup is pretty neat.
I just gave you $1,000,000. Quick, what do you do with it!
I would take $15 and head straight to the ferry to scope out my new cabin location on one of B.C's Gulf Islands. All I want is a cabin with a studio for my fiancee and I, where I can hear the ocean and wind talking to each other.
Best way to spend a day off?
A costume party.
What do you love most about where you live?
The best sushi outside Japan, and the fact that you can be on top of a mountain in the morning, and be back hanging out on the beach by late afternoon.
Ok, your chance to rant and rave about something* Talk shit.
Why do some people think its a good idea to put metal testicles on the back of their truck?!! http://www.russellleng.com
