We were rounding Alcatraz when these guys started waving their arms at us. With a strong flood current pushing them towards the island quickly, no wind to propel them and no motor on board, they asked us for a tow to Pier 39.
If you ever sail on the SF Bay you must know that the currents are strong, there's a lot of shipping traffic, and there is little or no wind in the winter. So make sure you have a reliable motor and VHF radio.
These guys were about 5 minutes from going on the rocks at Alcatraz, and they had neither of the above. They were lucky we were there and that we have a strong motor.
