Photographs and words by Michael C. Hsiung
The best take on the Ghostbusters guy I've seen.
Artist Shawn Beeks from Philadelphia and I met up through a mutual friend, gallerist Jonathan from the Slingluff Gallery. Shawn was passing through my area on his way to see the McKee show, and we had lunch and then check it out.
We hopped in Shawn's sweet rental and headed down to HVW8 Art + Design gallery on Spaulding Ave. This is where we had the One Way or Another art show that was presented by Color Magazine! Haven't been here in a while.
When Shawn and I got in the gallery, we were pretty much blown away immediately. McKee's original skate graphic drawings are just pretty much something you never see these days. Full penciled or pen or color penciled drawings to scale, which really spoke to Shawn because he was out here looking to meet up with some companies to make board graphics. Shawn is also probably one of the few folks I know who make board graphics the old fashion way - without computers and so forth. He draws them up to scale much like McKee does.
Some of McKee's board graphics.
I had this board man! Colvinetics I believe was the first everslick board!!! I remember sliding some red curbs on this and eating some shit. haha.
Buddha with Slurpee haha.
Most of us old guys remember this board coming out. . . here's the original drawing!!
The original Napping Negro board graphic.
All over the walls were McKee's sketches wheat pasted . . . these were SICK. . .skeletons and D&D shit, well sort of.
More on the range of Marc McKee's artwork. Up in the left corner is the pencil drawing of another from the Jovontae Turner series.
I remember this series coming out haha - Fucked Up Blind Kids. I never really got to ride any of the offensive boards because my mom be looking at my graphics all the time when I was a kid.
Besides the simple raddest of this drawing, it's really interesting to see McKee's techniques and so forth. White out to edit, tracing paper to layer edits, and stuff like that. All of which reminds me of the same way we'd make zines.
Close up. You can see how he added the drawing on the cover of the Pussy magazine. . .I think I've done that once or twice for a design myself.
Ritcher toupee flat. . . Probably to make an edit to the hair line or color.
Important and informational board for teens. How to put on, insert, and discard of a condom. haha. But check out how the drawing and the text on this board is put together... rad.
After checking out all the boards and art, I started to check out the wheat paste sketches all over. They might have been some of my favorites.
Check out all the sick ass wizard drawings and death dudes. . . yeah, I'm a nerd.
