CELEBRITY JUNK DRAWER
111 Minna Gallery
So I went to this art show with no expectations and only a vague familiarity with Jason Meciers work having seen or stumbled upon it somewhere or another in the past. Not surprising, considering hes enjoyed great commercial success with his art featured in several prominent publications including Entertainment Weekly, Details, and Rolling Stone, just to name a few. It was through Fecal Faces calendar that I had found out about it last minute, fulfilling my hopes of finding a cool art opening since it was the 1st Thursday I had gotten off since landing my new wait gig in Nobhill. When I finally made it, it was with sweet joyous discovery that I got to view this outstanding collection of 3D mosaics gracing the walls of Minna. Not only were the sizes impressive but also was the literal use of junk that were personally donated by the celebrities in creating these awesome larger than life portraits. It wasnt until my gay best friend asked me whether the artist was gay, that it dawned on me why hed ask that. Almost all of the subjects have the highly respectable reputation of being gay icons. Well at least thats what he pointed out and really, who am I to argue the quantifiable homosexualness of ANYTHING when pitted against the opinion of a real life honest-to-goodness gay? You know now that Im thinking about it... its also sort of a shame that I posted this after the fact since seeing them up close is a real treat when you notice the amazing detail and extreme thoughtfulness that went into each and every one of these pieces. Oh well, I guess you had to be there. Next time.
Using each star's own personal discarded belongings and crafted in uncanny 3-dimentional likeness, pop artist Jason Mecier's "CELEBRITY JUNK DRAWER" poses the eternal questions: Do the clothes make the man? Are we what we eat? If the shoe fits
Willing participants in this extraordinary show and cultural experience include: Phyllis Diller, Morgan Fairchild, Parker Posey, Pink, Barbi Benton, Elvira, Tura Satana, Susan Tyrrell, Lydia Lunch, Margaret Cho, Kathy Najimy, Bruce Vilanche, Kate Pierson, Scissor Sisters, Sara Gilbert, Joan Van Ark, Kim Darby, Ryan Adams, Dayna Devon and Heidi Fleiss.
