Ferris Plock: Inside Voices
Tuesday, 05 May 2015 /// Written by Trippe

"Inside Voices. The two opposing sides of the brain often are in conflict with each other. Their two distinct points of view often collide with a compromise coming only when blood has been spilled and beers have been opened." —Ferris Plock

This video project was originally part of an installation to accompany Kelly Tunstall kellytunstall.com and Ferris Plock's ferrisplock.com work in their third solo show with the gallery entitled “Inside Voices”. The opening reception was held on Friday, April 24th at FFDG 2277 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA.

A Short Interview w/ Ferris Plock
Friday, 23 May 2014 /// Written by Trippe

We check in with SF based Ferris Plock to see what he's been up to. Recently participated in a group show down in Southern CA, featured artist with the music festival Noise Pop, and is working towards a couple two person shows with his wife Kelly Tunstall... He's also looking forward to seeing the new film Godzilla.

1

So you're in LA for your show in Laguna Beach. How'd it go?

It went great... It was super cool to finally meet Don Pendleton and Jason Adams. I've been a fan of Don's boards since his Alien days... Jason is a total ripper... The people at Artists Republic 4 Tomorrow Gallery are super amazing + hospitable. The new space is rad, and they've built some close relationships with Vans so all their events are pretty exceptional.

6

What's an average day for the Ferris Plock?

I usually wake up to a kiss or shake or a slap or a "poppy! Get up!" from my oldest son. I immediately make too much coffee... Make some lunch for Brixton who eats at preschool most days. I take Brixton to Baker Beach or China Beach or Lands End and meet up with some other dads with kids. We play for a bit and then I skateboard with Brixton who is on his scooter to school... I go home and take Gus off of Kelly's hands which means listening to music and drumming or going to Mountain Lake Park. I put Gus down to nap... Draw a bit... Go pick up Brixton on my board... Come home... Play in the back yard... Make dinner... Watch Frozen or Ninjago with Brixton... Tell him a story in bed... then! Art! 8pm-3am art... Sleep... Repeat.

3

Best film you've seen lately?

I really enjoyed Her... I loved the concept... the acting... Thank God he put his rapping career on hold. I can't wait for the new Godzilla movie though... I've seen every Godzilla out there I think.

What have you been working on?

I'm doing a couple collaboration shows with Kelly Tunstall aka my wife this summer. One with White Walls/Shooting Gallery and the other with Antler Gallery in Portland. Excited (understatement) to be working with her on shows again.

Ferris Plock - Online Show, April 25th
Friday, 25 April 2014 /// Written by Trippe

Ferris Plock's online show is now... well, online as of 12pm, April 25th.

Ferris Plock is a San Francisco-based artist who lives within the city with his wife, Kelly Tunstall (Plock's partner in the artistic duo KeFe), and son Brixton. Plock brings a dedicated focus to his work that is paired with a wild sense of originality. Through a variety of mediums including acrylic, watercolor, spray paint, India ink, gold or silver leaf, and collage Plock creates highly detailed works, often character-based paintings on wood panel, that combine contemporary pop culture with the aesthetic of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblocks. Widely-accomplished and with a diverse range of artistic interests, Plock has created illustrations for many high-profile clients, has been involved in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and abroad, and also served as the 2010 SF Recology Artist in Resident.

Ferris Plock @The Shooting Gallery
Monday, 06 January 2014 /// Written by Trippe

SAN FRANCISCO --- We're back after a little Holiday breather with some images from Ferris Plock's (PREVIEWED) show which just completed at The Shooting Gallery. Rachel Ralph documents:

Our friend Ferris Plock let us see his new body of work with the opening of Unrest at the Shooting Gallery. Most of the works were on larger canvases and it was really great to be able to see all of the detail not only because of the size, but also because of the muted color palette of gold, grey, white and pastels. Clearly this show deserves a visit, and Ferris deserves a major congratulations on a great show. (STUDIO VISIT)

FFDG is pleased to present San Francisco based painters and husband and wife duo Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall in their second two person show with the gallery entitled “Loading” featuring new mixed media paintings inspired by the transfer of information as recontextualized through the artists unique and personal filter. An opening reception is scheduled for Friday, August 16th (7-10pm). Beer and wine will be available.

With minds fine-tuned to the perception of millisecond delays, seconds feel like infinities; a slow network is a robbery of our precious messages, instant pictures, the tenuous threads that connect us, that when severed, make us ever so nervous, scared, if not very very angry. These moments between are indeed a disquieting reality check. To be inaccessible or to be kept waiting is almost to die.

In this instant culture, we look at who is selling, who is buying, and what a search actually is: a reach of a skeleton, waiting to be fleshed in with missing lyrics, skin, muscles, bones. At the end of it all are our ever-hungry hands and eyes, starving for the result of a search sequence, the next delivery to add to our lives, the next bit of like for the status update of one of too many personae; we are always searching and forever loading.

“Loading” is Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock’s wry take on the recent Bay Area tech explosion; a follow up to 2012’s FFDG “Edible Complex” exhibition; a study of San Francisco’s food culture.

About Ferris Plock & Kelly Tunstall

The experimental yet classically grounded work of Ferris Plock and Kelly Tunstall lives comfortably in a space between graphic expression, stylized representation, surrealism, and sketch. Their preferred medium is a combination of acrylic, collage, spray paint, pencil, pen and ink, gold leaf. The binary contrast of masculine and feminine as the major theme in their work is also a very real and personal visual conversation between their imagined realities. Enhanced by complex, delicate layers, their bold pieces exist not only as individual pieces, but as part of larger installations or site-specific works.

Kelly Tunstall and Ferris Plock live and paint in San Francisco with their two sons. They have exhibited extensively locally, nationally, and internationally both together and separately. Plock and Tunstall recently completed a landmark commission for San Francisco’s Michelin-starred restaurant, SPQR. Tunstall also completed a major body of work to be on view permanently at Oakland’s A16. Tunstall and Plock have worked or are currently working with the San Francisco Arts Commission on their Passport initiative.

Winter Group Show @The Shooting Gallery
Tuesday, 22 January 2013 /// Written by Rachel Ralph

Bryan Schnelle,
Prepare to Die, Paper collage and enamel on canvas, 72"x72"
A week ago Saturday brought the opening of the Winter Group Show at Shooting Gallery. I got there very early, so a crowd was yet to form, but I hope some visitors braved the cold after a few drinks later in the evening. The artists showing are those that have helped with the continued development of the Shooting Gallery, including John Felix Arnold III, Ferris Plock, and APEX, all of whom have shown work recently in the Tenderloin. The intermingling of two-dimensional and sculptural works emphasized the variety of artists who show at the Shooting Gallery, which is a great way to finish their last show in this space. I can’t wait to see what they do with the larger space they are moving into very soon, continuing to foster creativity, but hopefully with much more room to do so.
