Jim Houser @LeBasse Projects in Culver City
Tuesday, 20 March 2012 /// Written by Michael C. Hsiung

Last Friday, March 10th Space 1026 founder Jim Houser (Philadelphia) new solo show, "As Quiet As It's Kept," opened at LeBasse Project's Culver City space.

Houser's show in Los Angeles featured new canvas paintings, mixed media installations as well as his signature panel/paintings. Houser has spent a week putting together his beautifully pieced installations from creating the music playing out of his hand-crafted cabinet speakers to birdhouses and wooden tables. In addition to his installation, Houser's new paintings featured some collaged elements –paper cutouts and shapes–which really can only be seen in person. "As Quiet As It's Kept" opened March 10th and runs through April 7th at LeBasse Projects in Culver City.

You should buy it dude.

Lots of Houser's panel paintings have text and a story behind them.

Another wall by Houser. Really loved the simplicity and colors of this one.

I'm always traveling around with Tiffany and Dave and Phil. Friends that are your neighbors are always good company.

I really dig the paintings by Kelsey Brookes. I've never gotten to view one in person, so seeing this was pretty rad.

Mostly 2
+Tim Kerr, Jim Houser, Merrilee Challiss, Chrissy Piper and maybe, just maybe, Dan Higgs
@Domy Books
913 E Cesar Chavez, Austin, TX 78702
Exhibition runs September 17 - October 20, 2011
BACKROOM GALLERY: William Gaynor and Conner O'Leary

The best game in town, Domy Books, once gain brought another stellar show to Austin, TX. A collaborative show between Tim Kerr and Jim Houser. The show was about being friends being friendly to one another. What an unpretentious concept right? Imagine that. Chrissy Piper, Merrilee Challiss, and long time partner in crime, Dan Higgs were invited by ringmaster, Tim Kerr, to participate. -Manik Nakra

I first discovered Jim Houser's work here on Fecal Face but finally got to see it in the flesh. He absolutely KILLED IT. This wooden shingle piece was my favorite. My buddies and I geeked out over his line work. In case this whole being a badass artist thing doesnt pan out, Jim could always be one of those people who write text on a grain of rice at the mall.

Tim and Jim's installation

Always tons of great limited edition books, toys, and zines at Domy. And they are constantly getting new stuff. Book People is a nationally known bookstore in Austin. Always at the top of National Best Bookstore lists. They dont even have the exclusives that Domy gets its hands on.

Jim Houser's EP Now Available on ITunes
Friday, 22 October 2010 /// Written by Trippe

Artist Jim Houser's new musical endeavour is now available through ITunes for only $6. We just downloaded and are giving it it's first listen. Instrumental goodness, and as a reviewer on ITunes has said, "His subtle use of electronics really adds to the quasi-lo-fi vibe of these track"... We agree and recommend the download.

My baby can't eat records. So go to ITunes and spend 6 dollars on my EP and then we can buy him some food. And if you want to tell to your friends that the album is available finally on itunes, then awesome. I can buy some food for myself then too. -Jim Houser

Jim Houser - 10yrs of Fecal Face
Friday, 27 August 2010 /// Written by Trippe

Everyday leading up to Fecal Face's 10 Year Anniversary Show, opening Friday, September 10th @The Luggage Store (after party @Mezzanine 9-2am), we'll be adding short interviews with artists participating.

Jim Houser may have been one of my first art crushes many many years back- pre Fecal Face days when living at the Howard House I took notice of a flier for a show Jim was having at Space 1026 in Philly. I'd seen Jim's work a few other times in skate mags since Jim painted a mini ramp they had @Space 1026. Having grown up skating too, certain music and visual input were similar to mine. His work touched on those influences but so uniquely his own and original. I'll leave it to Shepard Fairey who says it best in a Swindle interview, "When I think of Jim Houser and his art, I’m alway struck by the bond he consistently forges with his audience, the way every work of his shows me a piece of myself while at the same time reflecting his own catharsis. Jim’s paintings and installations span the entire spectrum of human emotion, but he never seems to pass judgment, leaving the bias up to the viewer’s discretion."

What were you up to in the year 2000?

In 2000, I had just moved back to Philadelphia from Providence, RI. All my buddies had started Space 1026 up, and it was kind of rolling along by that point. I was skateboarding a lot. I think that was around when i started to do graphics for Toy Machine.

How has your work changed in the last 10 years?

Don't they say it takes 10 years to get proficient at any discipline you attack? I guess I am proficient now, plus a few extra years.

What did you think 2010 would be like back then?

I was the last person I knew to get a cell phone. I was the last person I knew to get an Ipod. I think anxiety keeps me from thinking to far into the future. I'm not exactly an early adopter.

How has Fecal Face Dot Com been a part of your life and/or career?

After you guys interviewed me, I would get random emails from kids who dug my work, from Israel , from Finland , from Brazil... I think a TON of people check out the website, from all over the world. I think that exposure is pretty cool.

Jim Houser at Subliminal Projects
Wednesday, 21 July 2010 /// Written by Van Edwards

If you're in Los Angeles, be sure to get to Subliminal Projects where Jim Houser's show, The Homebody (photos), runs through Aug 7th. Jim also released a vinyl album of music through Free News Project ($24.95) which, as Jim writes: For the last 10 or so years, making music has always been the place that I turned when the paintbrush wasn't working for me. I found that even when I was burned out from making art, the act of sitting and making music would allow me not to feel like a waste of time and space. I came to realize that this was part of my whole process, so why not incorporate those sounds into the installations I do in a gallery.

This was Jim's son Seamus' first show.
