Last Gasp Friday at 111 Minna

This Friday, July 6th, the largest and oldest publishers and purveyors of underground books and comics in the world, Last Gasp, will open a curated show at 111 Minna featuring works by Shawn Barber, Clayton Bros, Kevin Taylor, David Choong Lee, Henry Lewis, Jay Howell, and many others.

For over 40 years Lasp Gasp has been publishing the art, writing and photography of the underground. Over the years they have published, and in some cases brought to light, some of the most respected and talented artists working today, including R. Crumb, Justin Green, Bill Griffith, Mark Ryden, Aline Kominsky-Crumb, Frank Kozik, Todd Schorr, Winston Smith, Spain Rodriguez, Robert Williams, and countless others.

Art Shows TONIGHT

Sonny Smith @Cinders in NYC <-- we told you earlier in the week about SF's Sonny Smith and his great 100 records project/ show which ran here in SF @Gallery 16. Well, now it's opening @Cinders in Brooklyn and it's worth seeing and listening to as Sonny recorded 100 songs to conincide with the 100 album covers his friends and artists created for fictional bands. Some solid artists in the lineup too. 7-10pm 103 Havemeyer St. Store#2 (Brooklyn)

MARK RYDEN Book Signing @SFMOMA <-- happening fom 6:30-8:30. Get yourself a copy of new book The Snow Yak Show - Images from the artist's acclaimed Japanese Snow Yak Show are reproduced in this large book, including many detailed images and drawings.

What Cannot Be Taken Away: Families and Prisons Project @Somarts <-- There are over seven million youth in this country with parents in the legal justice system. What Cannot Be Taken Away: Families and Prisons Project is a new exhibition of collaborative paintings with Evan Bissell and Community Works that share the experiences of eight individuals who have experienced this rupture in their own families. -Don't quite know what to expect at this show, but when was the last time you checked out the non-profit/ city run Somarts- 934 Brannan St. 6:30-9:30pm

Paintings by Ariel Diaz @ATA <-- large scale paintings draw on distant and imagined pop iconography, smudging together televisual, comic and food based images to create a whimsical take on the residues of childhood memories. @ATA 6-9pm
