Russell Leng | The Diamond Sea
Wednesday, 24 October 2012 /// Written by Van Edwards

The group show, The Diamond Sea, runs through Nov 10th in San Francisco at FFDG. We've been profiling the artists in the show and we contiue with one of our favorite painters who happens to reside in Vancouver.

Russell Leng is currently living in Edinburgh, UK, pursuing a MFA from Edinburgh College of Art and has been exhibited throughout North America and Europe, and awards include 1st Place Painting Prize from the Surrey Art Gallery, and a BMO Student Invitational nomination. He has been featured in numerous online and print publications including Gestalten, Chronicle, and the Globe and Mail.

Location? Age? Education? Website?

C9, Edinburgh. B.A. from Trinity Western University, and currently pursing a M.F.A. from Edinburgh College of Art.

How would you describe your work to someone?

I'm interested in opposites and finding ways to negotiate between them. Inquiries into natural vs. fabricated environments, chance vs. control, and digital vs. firsthand experiences have all been recent investigations that aim to articulate contemporary in-between states I find myself in. In my paintings I have been focusing specifically on the conglomeration of natural and man-made environments melding together through rigid shapes interacting with loose marks.

Influences?

The good ones and the bad ones.

Favorite place traveled?

Toss up between Indonesia and Colombia.

Well, there was a fire in our building on the 27th of September that left FFDG homeless, but with the help with our friends at Park Life, we found a temporary space in the Inner Richmond while we figure out our permenant home situation.

In the last couple weeks we made a rough looking space look gallery like with a lot of work and much more white paint. Last Friday, Nov 11th, we opened two shows. Mario Marinez (Mars-1) in the larger back space and the group show 11.11.11 featuring young artists from the USA and beyond doing work that we're very excited about and who have been recently featured within Fecal Face. Here we present the group show 11.11.11.

Russell Leng for 11.11.11
Friday, 28 October 2011 /// Written by Trippe

We're going to featuring some mini interviews with artists participating in the group show 11.11.11 opening up at FFDG's temporary gallery space at 248 Clement St @4th Ave in the Inner Richmond on Friday, Nov 11th (6-10pm).

Also opening that same night at FFDG is the solo show, Everything Under the Sun, with San Francisco based Mario Martinez (Mars-1).

Age? Location? Website? And who do you think you are?

25. From Vancouver, Canada but currently living in Edinburgh Scotland. Artist.

Describe your work a little bit.

I use hard-edge geometric shapes and loose marks to articulate the relationship between natural and man-made structures. The result is an extraction or sample from the conglomeration of these opposite forms of environment.

Music heavy on your playlist these days?

No Gold, Brasstronaut, and Radiozero podcasts for the old home. Belle and Sebastian for the new home.

Favorite mediums to work within?

My paintings are mostly acrylic and spray paint, but recently I have been using wood and glass to experiment with sculpture and installation.

Dream job other than artist?

Island caretaker

When not creating work, you can be found doing...

Hanging out with my wife and exploring my new city.

How would you describe your work to a stranger who's never seen it?

A collision of gradients, geometric shapes, and lines that come together to create a new (usually floating) entity.
